MP Court Summons Netflix Over 'Pandit' Title Controversy
24 Feb
Summary
- Notices issued to Neeraj Pandey and Netflix executives regarding film title.
- Complaint alleges 'Ghooskhor Pandit' title is derogatory to Brahmin community.
- Court proceeding despite reported title modification by filmmakers.

A court in Madhya Pradesh has issued notices to filmmaker Neeraj Pandey and senior Netflix officials. This action stems from a criminal defamation complaint filed over the film title 'Ghooskhor Pandit'. The Judicial Magistrate First Class court in Jabalpur took cognizance of the complaint, which alleges the title is derogatory to the Brahmin community.
The complainant, Pt. Vaibhav Pathak, stated that the term 'Pandit' historically signifies knowledge and sanctity. Associating it with 'briber' allegedly undermines the community's dignity and social standing. Pathak, a member of the Madhya Pradesh Progressive Brahmin Mahasabha, highlighted the reputational harm caused by the title's publicity, even if it is reportedly being modified.
The notices have been sent to Pandey as producer-director and to Netflix executives, including Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos. These individuals are expected to respond to the court's summons. The proceedings underscore the ongoing discussion between creative expression and community sensitivities, with further hearings anticipated.
