Mouse on Mars, a highly influential German experimental music project, is releasing a new album titled "Spatial, No Problem." The record is a result of a whirlwind recording session in 2019 with the iconic dub and reggae artist Lee "Scratch" Perry, who passed away in 2021 at age 85. This album features what are believed to be some of Perry's last vocal recordings, capturing his signature style amidst the duo's glitchy electronic soundscapes.
The collaboration occurred during Perry's unpredictable visit to Mouse on Mars' former Berlin studio. Over four intense days, the trio, including percussionist Dodo NKishi, recorded extensively, with friends and collaborators contributing. Mouse on Mars spent years processing the material due to various factors, including the pandemic and the sheer volume of recordings.
To celebrate the album, Mouse on Mars will present an immersive "spatial audio" installation in London at the Barbican Centre's The Pit. This unique soundscape aims to replicate a natural 3D hearing experience, offering the only intended way to fully engage with the album's intended sonic presentation.
