As the release of Mortal Kombat II approaches in May 2026, New Line is already making plans to expand the film franchise with a third installment. Screenwriter Jeremy Slater, who penned and executive produced the sequel, has just announced Mortal Kombat III at New York Comic-Con.
The confidence in the franchise's future is bolstered by the impressive performance of the first Mortal Kombat II trailer. The red-band trailer, which dropped in July, set a new all-time record for a red-band trailer, racking up 107 million global views within 24 hours. This has further solidified Warner Bros.' high expectations for the sequel, which was originally scheduled for release in October 2025 but has now been shifted to May 2026.
The producing team behind the first two Mortal Kombat films, including Todd Garner, James Wan, and director Simon McQuoid, is expected to return for the third installment. The Mortal Kombat franchise, based on the blockbuster video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, has already seen a successful reboot in 2021, which grossed over $84 million worldwide despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
