Morecambe is preparing a compelling bid to be named the UK's first Town of Culture, an initiative that promises to showcase the area's vibrant energy, diversity, and creativity. Organizers are actively seeking input from residents to ensure the proposal genuinely reflects the town's identity and aspirations.
The joint partnership, involving Morecambe Winter Gardens, Deco Publique, and More Music, is currently in the information-gathering phase. They are speaking with local groups across education, sport, and the arts to understand priorities and develop a proposal rooted in shared purpose. This effort aims to secure a £3m prize to fund a 12-month cultural program.
Towns can submit expressions of interest by March 31, with a shortlist expected in the spring. Shortlisted candidates will receive £60,000 for bid development, while the two runners-up will get £250,000. A public drop-in session was scheduled for March 23, with online options available for those unable to attend.
