The Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal recently honored comedians with a blend of sharp roasts and heartfelt tributes. Gabriel Iglesias, a veteran comic, delivered a poignant message, urging aspiring comedians to pursue their passion for the love of performing rather than solely for financial gain. He advised that financial rewards would follow if the art was mastered.
The festival, which emerged from bankruptcy protection in 2024, was acknowledged by host Tone Bell for its diligence in financial management, humorously noting the need for efficiency. The event also celebrated the unique flavor of Canadian comedy, as exemplified by rising star Lisa Gilroy, who accepted her award with characteristic Canadian self-deprecation and a nod to mental well-being.
Other award recipients included Chris Fleming and Atsuko Okasuka, who both offered distinctive perspectives on their craft and recognition. Iglesias also returned to present Bruce Hills, a former festival programmer, with the JFL Legacy Tribute Award. Hills, reflecting on 41 years with the festival, stressed the importance of teamwork and collective belief in success within the comedy community.
