- Mogambo's costume blended foreign general with Indian landlord.
The enduring legacy of Amrish Puri's Mogambo from 'Mr. India' is explored, with director Shekhar Kapur sharing insights into the character's iconic dialogue. Kapur admitted he never anticipated the line 'Mogambo khush hua' becoming so legendary.
During initial brainstorming, screenwriter Javed Akhtar presented the line, which Kapur found so compelling he ensured it was delivered with varied emphasis and actions. Akhtar accurately predicted its widespread appeal, even foreseeing its use in cricket-related celebrations.
However, the dialogue's fame became a burden for Puri, who humorously recounted feeling typecast. Mogambo's striking appearance, a blend of a "foreign general" and an Indian "zamindar," was meticulously crafted by costume designer Madhav Agasti, using elements like a coat, breeches, and riding boots, all within a budget of Rs 25,000.
Interestingly, the concept for 'Mr. India' itself was inspired by Amitabh Bachchan. Javed Akhtar conceived the idea of an invisible man after hearing Bachchan's voice used at a film launch when the actor was absent, realizing the potential of an invisible character voiced by the star.
