The International Kite Festival 2025 commenced with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz gracing the Sabarmati Riverfront on January 12, 2026. Hundreds of kite enthusiasts from across the globe participated, filling the skies with vibrant displays. The festival's centerpiece was an intricate replica of Ahmedabad's UNESCO World Heritage Walled City, complete with traditional architectural elements and a chabutara.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi shared insights into India's kite-making heritage with Chancellor Merz, showcasing traditional crafts through dioramas and live demonstrations. The leaders also witnessed a spectacular fireworks display and a diverse cultural program, featuring an Indo-German musical symphony, various Indian dance forms, and performances by giant papier-mache puppets, symbolizing a confluence of cultures.
Modi and Merz actively participated, flying kites and interacting with kitists, including a team from Germany. The festival, which extends to January 13, 2026, marks a growing global reputation for Ahmedabad as a premier kite-flying destination and will include the first-ever night Uttarayan celebration.
