In November 2025, musician Mod Sun, 38, reflected on his whirlwind romance and failed engagement to Avril Lavigne, 41. The two pop-punk artists met in January 2021 and released the collaborative single "Flames" within weeks. They were first romantically linked the following month and got engaged in Paris in April 2022.
However, less than a year later, the couple called off their engagement in February 2023. Mod Sun has since been focused on trying to understand the split through an empathetic lens, saying he now tries to "step in their position" when someone does him wrong, rather than seeking revenge.
In July 2023, Mod Sun dropped a new breakup song called "Strangers" that featured revealing lyrics about their relationship arc, from seeing Lavigne on TV before they met to going "from strangers to lovers to strangers again." The music video for the song was also filmed in Paris, where Mod Sun had proposed.
Despite the heartbreak, Mod Sun says he's now in a better place, with a more secure sense of self and a desire to be a "shining light" for others going through similar experiences.
