MK2 is strategically repositioning classic auteur films for global theatrical releases. The company has secured worldwide rights to Michael Haneke's 2007 remake of "Funny Games," adding to its collection of his works. This initiative also includes newly restored versions of Ang Lee's early films such as "Pushing Hands" and "The Wedding Banquet."
Further expanding its curated offerings, MK2 has acquired rights to Xavier Dolan's "I Killed My Mother" and "Heartbeats." The company is also reviving Gregg Araki's "Mysterious Skin" with a new 4K restoration and has added other restored titles like Lisa Cholodenko's "High Art."
In collaboration with Martin Scorsese's The Film Foundation, MK2 represents worldwide rights, excluding North America, to restored films from the World Cinema Project. Recent additions include Sergei Parajanov's "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors."
MK2 CEO Nathanaël Karmitz emphasizes that films are living works to be restored and recontextualized for audiences. This strategy aims to create theatrical events that give classic cinema a renewed public life, capitalizing on a global trend of younger audiences seeking curated and restored cinematic experiences.
