Summary

- The event brought together nearly 70 artists and writers.
- Nair is recognized as a matriarch figure in the diaspora.

Filmmaker Mira Nair recently co-hosted a lively Diwali celebration at Passerine, an Indian bistro in Manhattan. The event drew approximately 70 authors, filmmakers, artists, and writers to observe the Hindu festival. Nair arrived fashionably late, receiving a warm reception from guests.
Her role as the mother of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who was not in attendance, has positioned her as a recognizable matriarch within the South Asian diaspora. Restaurant co-owner Alvina Patel Buxani noted that Nair has provided the community with a sense of reflection.
In previous years, Nair traditionally celebrated Diwali by illuminating her home with candles, creating colorful rangoli designs outside her building, and hosting friends and family for a festive meal.
