Filmmaker's Mother Theme: A 30-Year Obsession?
31 Oct
Summary
- Director Milcho Manchevski revisits recurring mother themes in his work.
- He faced blacklisting and corruption charges for reporting film agency issues.
- Two films, a dark comedy and a stark documentary, released in close succession.
Director Milcho Manchevski's eighth feature, 'Sister Brother Manhole Cover,' premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival. The film delves into fraternal love, societal margins, motherhood, and the wealth gap. Manchevski, known for works like 'Before the Rain,' discussed his artistic process, emphasizing intuitive creation and the exploration of human contradictions.
He noted the pervasive presence of mothers in his films, attributing it partly to the early loss of his own mother. Manchevski also expressed frustration with a trend toward message-driven, "neo-social realism" in filmmaking, which he believes can overshadow artistic merit.
The filmmaker detailed his experience with blacklisting and corruption allegations. After reporting misconduct at the film agency in 2020 and 2022, his projects were frozen, and criminal charges were filed against him. He successfully sued the agency, leading to the release of funds for 'Sister Brother Manhole Cover.'
Despite these challenges, Manchevski independently funded and produced his first feature-length documentary, 'Good People,' which focuses on survivors of a tragic Macedonian nightclub fire. He expressed suspicion of the documentary genre, citing concerns about earnestness and the portrayal of "truth."
Manchevski's next project, tentatively titled 'Homecoming,' is a story he has contemplated for over thirty years, focusing on forgiveness and self-acceptance.
