Inside a large tent near Milan's San Siro Stadium, around 1,200 volunteers are diligently rehearsing for the opening ceremony of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, set to occur on February 6. These volunteers, ranging from classical dancers to an 88-year-old widow, have been preparing since November.
The ceremony's central theme is 'Harmony,' a message director Marco Balich deems particularly significant given current global unrest. He stressed the importance of Olympic values like respectful and peaceful competition.
Italian excellence and creativity will be showcased, alongside performances by artists like Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli. A notable aspect will be the use of two Olympic cauldrons, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's designs, located in Milan and Cortina, over 400 kilometers apart.
Rehearsals are escalating to nine hours daily, aiming to create an emotionally resonant spectacle for the estimated 60,000 live attendees and millions worldwide. The event is set to be the most spread-out in Olympic history.
