Time Travel Comedy 'Mike & Nick' Defies Genre Odds

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, a genre-defying film, successfully merges action-comedy with gangster, romcom, tragicomedy, and science fiction elements. Writer-director BenDavid Grabinski, who co-showran Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, brought his unique script to 20th Century studios, securing backing for the ambitious project. The film centers on Mike and Nick, with Vince Vaughn portraying both present and future versions of Nick due to a time travel plot device.

The narrative sees Mike, an enforcer for loan shark Nick, planning to leave the criminal underworld. However, Nick tasks him with one final assignment, which involves "Future Nick" who has traveled back six months. Director Grabinski intentionally kept the time travel mechanics understated, believing audiences would understand the core story without extensive exposition. This approach proved successful, with test screenings showing no audience confusion regarding the time-hopping elements.

The story culminates with "Present Nick" sacrificing himself to save Mike, Alice, and their unborn child. Both "Present Nick" and "Future Nick" die simultaneously due to injuries sustained. The film concludes with Alice revealing a second time machine, leaving Mike poised to potentially prevent Nick's death, though a sequel is not currently planned. Grabinski aimed for a satisfying standalone experience, focusing on emotional catharsis and the possibility of personal change.

The film's release date was March 27, making it available on Hulu. Grabinski also noted the complex process of filming Vince Vaughn in a double role, which was challenging but ultimately rewarding. He successfully secured the rights to Oasis's "Don't Look Back in Anger" for a pivotal scene well before the band's reunion was announced, highlighting his meticulous planning and fortunate timing.
