The Menier Chocolate Factory will host the U.K. debut of "Midnight at the Never Get," a musical centered on a forbidden romance in 1960s New York City. Directed by David Cromer, previews commence on July 11, with opening night on July 20 and a closing date of September 12.
The musical, conceived by Mark Sonnenblick, Sam Bolen, and Max Friedman, features book, music, and lyrics by Sonnenblick. It tells the story of Trevor Copeland and Arthur Brightman, whose love was outlawed during that era. Their secret nightclub act, "Midnight," served as an act of defiance, performing love songs against a world that demanded their concealment.
As social tensions escalated with the onset of a historic movement, Trevor and Arthur found themselves torn between their clandestine affair and the burgeoning social revolution. This production, which originally premiered off-Broadway in 2018, has been re-imagined for its London stage debut.
Lead performer Ben Platt expressed his excitement for his first full run on the London stage at the Menier, transforming into the nightclub setting of "The Never Get." He highlighted his collaboration with Sonnenblick, describing him as a genius songwriter and a true friend. Platt also noted the musical as his first wholly original work since "Dear Evan Hansen."
