Sony Pictures has acquired North American distribution rights for the thriller "The Surgeon," a breakout film from the Toronto International Film Festival. The studio will also distribute the film in Latin America, Italy, China, and Hong Kong.
The movie stars Michelle Yeoh as a skilled surgeon who is abducted. She is forced to operate on a mysterious patient, but ultimately uses her 35 years of expertise to turn against her captors and fight for survival.
Directed by Roshan Sethi, who is also a practicing radiation oncologist, the film emphasizes realistic surgical procedures. Sethi collaborated with Dr. O'Keefe, a surgeon from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, to train Yeoh in authentic surgical techniques.
Yeoh emphasized the importance of accurately portraying surgical movements on screen, stating, "It was really important for me, so that when I did the movements and all that, it looked real." The film was shot in Dublin, where Dr. O'Keefe runs a simulator lab.
