A reimagining of the iconic 1988 martial arts film "Bloodsport" is currently in development, with A24 set to finance and distribute the project. Esteemed creator Michaela Coel, known for "I May Destroy You," is attached to write and direct the new iteration. This collaboration marks Coel's third with the studio.
The original "Bloodsport" starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as a soldier who competes in an underground martial arts tournament, significantly boosting his career. Coel shared her anticipation for delving into the demanding world of fighters, stating her awe for the sport's discipline. Producer Marc Toberoff looks forward to reviving the high-energy tournament format that defined the original.
Michaela Coel is also actively involved in other A24 projects, including the mini-series "First Day on Earth" and upcoming films such as "Mother Mary" and "The Christophers."
