Michael Joo, a conceptual sculptor and installation maker, has been a notable figure in the New York art world for 30 years. His career is now experiencing a significant surge in recognition, marking an end to his previously under-the-radar presence.
Joo's artistic endeavors are currently highlighted by multiple high-profile appearances. These include a recent solo exhibition in New York, participation in Frieze New York, an upcoming work at Google's Gradient Canopy campus in 2025, and a group show at Hauser & Wirth Menorca this summer. Most notably, two of his pieces are featured in the recently opened Venice Biennale.
James Rondeau, director of the Art Institute of Chicago, expressed his enthusiasm for Joo's deserved recognition. Working from his Bushwick studio, Joo, 60, explained that his art is characterized by being "anchored by some kind of physical identity or material" while simultaneously "lifting off the ground and aspiring to go somewhere else." This artistic philosophy is influenced by his parents, who were agricultural scientists.
