Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch: A Dream Sold

Michael Jackson, the "King of Pop," built an extraordinary private world on his Neverland Ranch in California's Santa Barbara County. Originally Zaca Laderas Ranch, it was purchased by Jackson in 1988 for approximately $19.5 million and renamed Neverland.

He transformed the 2,700-acre estate into a whimsical theme park, featuring a French country-style house, a movie theater, a train station, and an amusement park with a Ferris wheel, carousel, and bumper cars. It also housed a zoo with various animals.

In 2003, authorities searched the property during an investigation, which led to Jackson's 2005 criminal trial, where he was acquitted of all charges. He never resided at Neverland again after this period.

Following Jackson's death in 2009, the estate faced financial difficulties. Its rides were removed and sold. The property, reverting to its former name Sycamore Valley Ranch, was listed for sale in 2015 for $100 million.

Ultimately, the ranch was sold in December 2020 for $22 million to billionaire businessman Ron Burkle, a family friend. Burkle's spokesperson indicated it was purchased as a land banking opportunity, marking the end of Neverland's reign as a fantasy kingdom.
