MF Husain's significant artwork, "Untitled (Benares)", was recently sold for Rs 15.6 crore at Saffronart's Spring Live Auctions held online. This large acrylic canvas, measuring 207 x 397 cm, was acquired directly from the artist and features his signature.
The painting is a vivid depiction of Kashi's ghats, artistically blending spirituality with everyday life. Husain had expressed that his visit to Benares in the early 1960s, during which he explored the city's narrow streets and ghats, profoundly impacted him. He observed the eternal cycle of life and death, finding beauty and a sense of freedom even in death.
According to Saffronart's president, Minal Vazirani, the artwork's value was enhanced by strong market demand for Husain's rare pieces, its significant scale, and its evocative subject matter. These factors contributed to its notable sale price, highlighting the enduring appeal of Husain's modernist vision rooted in Indian culture.
