Met Gala Exhibit Canceled Over John Galliano Controversy
31 Aug
Summary
- Met Museum exhibit honoring John Galliano has been canceled.
- Galliano faced backlash for past anti-Semitic remarks.
- The designer withdrew to avoid overshadowing the Costume Institute's work.

The Metropolitan Museum announced Monday that an exhibition intended to honor designer John Galliano has been canceled. This decision follows a growing outcry over the museum's initial plan to feature the controversial British designer.
Galliano, who was dismissed from Dior in 2011 after videos emerged of him making anti-Semitic statements, expressed his deep regret. He stated that he did not want the debate surrounding him to place the Met in a difficult position or detract from the Costume Institute's achievements.
Andrew Bolton, curator of the Met's Costume Institute, acknowledged the pain and concern the exhibition had caused and supported the decision not to proceed. Anna Wintour, a key figure in organizing the Met Gala, called Galliano's withdrawal "very courageous."
