"Messy" Sex Comedy Debuts in Theaters and VOD This Halloween

Alexi Wasser's directorial debut, the sex comedy "Messy," is gearing up for its theatrical and VOD release on October 31st. Vertical has acquired the film for distribution in North America, the UK, and Ireland.
The movie centers on Stella, played by Wasser, a promiscuous love addict who relocates to New York City following a difficult breakup. Determined to find the right match, Stella embarks on a string of dates in the hopes of moving on. The supporting cast includes Thomas Middleditch, Jack Kilmer, Ruby McCollister, Adam Goldberg, Mario Cantone, and Ione Skye.
"Messy" had its world premiere at the New/Next Film Festival and held its New York City premiere at the Downtown Festival. The film is produced by Simone Films, with Wasser, Rebekah Sherman-Myntti, KJ Rothweiler, and Amira Stevenson-Hynes serving as producers. Executive producers include David Lowery and Augustine Frizzell.
In an interview, Wasser discussed how the film was inspired by her own personal experiences with dating and relationships. "For me, because so much of 'Messy' was autobiographical -- heightened, but autobiographical -- it took me making this movie to learn the lessons I should have learned after all my disappointing and at times humiliating dating experiences," she said.
