Meryl Streep will be taking on the iconic voice role of Aslan in Greta Gerwig's upcoming adaptation of C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, set to premiere on February 12, 2026. Liam Neeson, who voiced the majestic lion in Disney's earlier Narnia films, expressed his surprise at the news but warmly approved of Streep taking over the part.
Gerwig described her search for the perfect Aslan voice, seeking an actor who possessed profound gravitas, a sense of wonder, and exceptional acting talent. She specifically looked for someone older than 70, with wisdom yet capable of childlike wonder, identifying a very short list of ideal candidates, with Streep at the top.
The Magician's Nephew is chronologically the first story in The Chronicles of Narnia, detailing Aslan's creation of Narnia. Gerwig's broader plans include adapting all of Lewis' Narnia books for Netflix, with Streep having joined the project to voice Aslan in April 2025.
