Moroccan visual artist Meriem Bennani is being honored at the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, Switzerland. The festival is presenting the Swiss premiere of her debut feature film, 'Bouchra,' co-directed with Orian Barki. This work uses a distinctive mix of 3D animation, anthropomorphism, and documentary elements to explore themes of queer identity and maternal relationships through the story of a Moroccan coyote filmmaker in New York.
Beyond 'Bouchra,' the festival will showcase seven of Bennani's short films and her broader artistic practice. Known for her installations that fuse global pop culture with Maghreb history, Bennani's work has been exhibited internationally at venues like MoMA PS1 and the Whitney Museum. Her installation 'Sole Crushing,' featuring numerous pairs of flip-flops and tap shoes, will also be part of the exhibition.
Bennani's past projects include the eight-episode miniseries '2 Lizards,' created during the 2020 lockdown, which utilized animation and non-fiction to capture the pandemic's atmosphere. Her "Life on the Caps: Trilogy in Single Channel" series uses CGI and live-action to build a dystopian universe addressing immigration. The festival anticipates Bennani's discussion on her hybrid, pop, and political approach will expand creative possibilities.
