Meredith Grey Scales Back Role on Grey's Anatomy as Pompeo Exits
31 Oct
Summary
- Meredith Grey (Pompeo) to have reduced role in Grey's Anatomy season 19
 - Jackson and Meredith clash, then find common ground during a surgery
 - Grey's Anatomy cutting minimum guarantees for veteran cast members

In the latest episode of the hit ABC series Grey's Anatomy, which aired on October 30th, 2025, Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo) had a tense interaction with Jackson (Williams) at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Meredith criticized a published paper by Tom Koracick (Greg Germann) about Alzheimer's research, but Jackson, who was mentored by Koracick, fired back at her.
Despite their confrontation, Jackson ultimately needed Meredith's help with a reconstructive surgery, and the two doctors were able to find common ground by the end of the episode. The incident also made Meredith realize she needs to continue her own research, which means she will be less present at the hospital going forward.
This development comes as Pompeo, who has played Meredith since Grey's Anatomy premiered in 2005, has confirmed she will have a reduced role in the show's 19th season. While she will remain an executive producer and be featured in at least seven episodes, Pompeo is transitioning out of the series as a full-time cast member.
Additionally, Grey's Anatomy is reducing the minimum guarantees for its veteran cast members, meaning some fan favorites may appear in as few as 14 out of the show's 18 episodes per season. This includes Caterina Scorsone's character, Amelia, who will be taking a sabbatical that is expected to last until 2026.
