Melissa Auf der Maur: '90s Demos Resurface in New Album

Melissa Auf der Maur has unveiled Bass Womb Room: My '90s 4-Track Demos x Field Recordings, her first album release in 16 years. This unique project weaves together previously unreleased demos recorded in the 1990s with eight newly composed interludes.

The interludes are partly constructed from field recordings Auf der Maur captured by placing a handycam on her amplifier while touring with Hole and the Smashing Pumpkins. She described the demos as a reflection of her internal experimentation against major label pressures for mainstream hits.

Bass Womb Room is also the title of a forthcoming photography exhibition and photobook. The exhibition is set to open at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto on September 2. The accompanying photobook will be released on September 8.

This album follows Auf der Maur's 2021 book, Even the Good Girls Will Cry: A '90s Rock Memoir, and her last solo album, Out of Our Minds, which was released in 2010. The album was released digitally and on cassette on September 4.
