Melbourne Theatre Company unveils star-studded 2027 season

Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) has announced its highly anticipated 2027 season, headlined by the Australian premiere of David Adjmi's record-breaking Broadway and West End hit, 'Stereophonic'. This 70s rock drama, celebrated for its immersive portrayal of a band's intense studio sessions and rumored inspirations drawn from Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours', earned a staggering 13 Tony nominations and five wins.

Joining 'Stereophonic' is Kimberly Belflower's 'John Proctor is the Villain', a Tony-nominated play exploring themes of power and inherited narratives through the lens of teenage girls in rural Georgia confronting Arthur Miller's 'The Crucible' in the context of #MeToo. MTC's artistic director, Anne-Louise Sarks, will direct this production, which has been adapted into a film by Tina Fey.

The MTC's 2027 program also includes Winsome Pinnock's 'The Authenticator', Edward Albee's 'A Delicate Balance' starring Sigrid Thornton, and a solo reimagining of 'Richard III' with Kate Mulvany. Furthermore, the season champions Australian stories with new plays focusing on artist Clarice Beckett and a significant 1985 meeting concerning South Africa's apartheid, alongside a First Nations adaptation of 'War of the Worlds'.
