Mel Gibson is currently in production for 'The Resurrection of the Christ,' his ambitious follow-up to the 2004 blockbuster 'The Passion of the Christ.' Filming is taking place in various locations south of Rome, including the historic town of Matera. Notably, excommunicated Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, who has made highly controversial statements, is reportedly consulting on the film. Viganò, formerly the Vatican's ambassador to the U.S., has been seen on set with Gibson.
The production has employed a crew of over 500 film workers. The lead roles have been recast, with Jaakko Ohtonen now portraying Jesus and Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene. Gibson has described the scripts, co-written with Randall Wallace, as an 'acid trip,' hinting at a unique approach to the resurrection narrative. 'The Resurrection of the Christ' is slated to be released as two separate films in 2027.
