Thousands of devotees converged in Madurai to witness the grand consecration ceremony of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, an event that occurred after a 17-year interval.
The sacred rituals for the consecration were conducted on Thursday, September 17, 2026, between 7:40 AM and 8:10 AM. The ceremonies were accompanied by the chanting of Tamil and Sanskrit hymns, culminating with the pouring of theertham (holy water) onto the kalasams atop the temple towers.
Holy water was then distributed to the assembled devotees using pipes and even drones, adding a modern touch to the ancient rites. The main yaga sala rituals commenced on September 11, featuring 180 yaga kundams for continuous observances leading up to the consecration day.
To accommodate the large gathering, LED screens were set up around the temple premises. The Madurai district administration and corporation officials ensured ample facilities, including drinking water and mobile toilets. Extensive security measures were implemented with a significant police presence to manage the crowds and ensure safety.
