Meena Kumari, enduring the ravages of liver cirrhosis, filmed her final scenes for 'Gomti Ke Kinare' in late 1971. This project, directed by Saawan Kumar Tak, became her poignant farewell, a stark contrast to her famed swansong, 'Pakeezah.' Kumari's dedication was so profound that she sold her Bandra bungalow to finance the film when director Saawan Kumar depleted his savings.
Against medical advice, Kumari returned to the set, often needing support to stand. Her last day of filming occurred on December 28, 1971. She passed away on March 31, 1972, shortly after 'Pakeezah' premiered. The release of 'Gomti Ke Kinare' in late 1972 saw it overshadowed by the success of 'Pakeezah,' which transformed into a box-office hit following her death.
Director Saawan Kumar Tak recalled Kumari's unwavering commitment, noting she found joy in mimicking and storytelling despite her deteriorating health. Her final words on set, 'My work is finished,' marked the end of a prolific career. Nargis, a close friend, penned a tribute reflecting on Kumari's lifelong sorrow, suggesting the world was not meant for her.
