The McMichael Canadian Art Collection will temporarily close to the public on the evening of July 26, marking the start of a significant building and grounds redevelopment. Construction is anticipated to commence in fall 2026 and conclude in 2029, ushering in a new era for the gallery.
The project, led by Hariri Pontarini Architects, represents the first major investment in the McMichael site in over four decades. It promises a 60% increase in space for exhibitions, education, and conservation, alongside modernized facilities and state-of-the-art classrooms.
The revitalization benefits from substantial financial backing, including up to $50 million from the Ontario government and $25 million from the federal government. The total project cost is estimated at $150 million, inclusive of private donations.
During the closure, touring exhibitions will keep the collection accessible across Canada and internationally. The McMichael's permanent collection boasts nearly 8,000 artworks, featuring masters like the Group of Seven and influential Indigenous artists.
