Paul McCartney's beloved 1961 Höfner bass guitar, an instrument synonymous with his early Beatles iconography, has been recovered. The violin-shaped bass, purchased for a modest sum in Hamburg, vanished over fifty years ago and was located in 2024. This remarkable recovery was spearheaded by Höfner employee Nick Wass, with crucial assistance from ambulance service worker Steve Glenister.
The documentary detailing the bass's journey ultimately reveals a poignant truth behind its disappearance. While the recovery offers a happy ending, the underlying cause of the theft—driven by personal hardship and opportunistic survival—introduces a somber note that the film struggles to fully integrate.
McCartney acquired a second Höfner bass, the "'63 bass," shortly after the first. He later recalled the '61 original was stolen in the early 1970s from a Wings roadie van in Ladbroke Grove, West London. At the time, he was not overly concerned, having a replacement.
Suspicion initially fell on the band Hawkwind and their associate Michael "DikMik" Davies due to their proximity to the theft location. However, the actual culprit was identified as someone with a sadder, more mundane motive, who eventually gifted the instrument to a pub landlord, leading to its eventual placement in Hastings.
