Mayor Mamdani Impersonator Wins Cash Prize

A Zohran Mamdani look-alike contest drew a crowd near Washington Square Park on Sunday, celebrating various aspects of the mayor's public persona. Amadeo Fusca, 40, a recurring impersonator of the mayor, clinched the $100 prize. Fusca's winning attire featured a New York Knicks jersey paired with formalwear, a signature Mamdani haircut, and facial hair, reminiscent of an outfit the mayor wore after a Knicks victory.

The event required no formal judging panel; instead, attendees applauded to determine the winner after each contestant shared their favorite pizza. Entrants creatively interpreted Mamdani's public image, donning silver rings, red-and-black ties, variations of dark formalwear, and even a brown suit worn during his 2025 mayoral campaign. Some referenced his recent cycling without a helmet by including bicycle helmets, while another evoked Mamdani's 2019 Mr. Cardamom era with an apron and no shirt.

Organizers faced a venue change as the gathering shifted from inside Washington Square Park to just beyond its boundaries due to an unobtained permit. The social platform Sonder sponsored the event. Mamdani, known for his focus on New York's working class, has gained popularity among younger residents and on social media since taking office in January.

This was not the first event honoring Mamdani; a similar contest occurred in Brooklyn during his 2025 mayoral bid. Fusca, whose impersonations have garnered millions of views online, has been developing his act since friends pointed out his resemblance to Mamdani during his campaign. He noted his initial reluctance to alter his appearance but ultimately embraced the role, especially after Mamdani's election win.
