Summary
- Povich and Chung struggled to have a child, tried to get pregnant
- Adopted son Matthew, now 30, in 1995 after failed attempts
- Chung said adopting Matthew was "the most wonderful thing"

In November 2025, Maury Povich, now 86, reflected on his and wife Connie Chung's decision to adopt their son Matthew, who is currently 30 years old. The couple had tried to get pregnant over 30 years ago, with Chung, 79, even taking time off from her job at CBS. However, their attempts were met with public scrutiny, with late-night talk show hosts making jokes about their efforts.
Ultimately, Povich and Chung were unable to conceive and decided to adopt. Povich recalled that Chung had initially requested a child who was "half Chinese and half Jewish," but their lawyer told them that such a specific request was unlikely to be fulfilled. Nevertheless, the couple eventually found their son Matthew, whom Povich described as "spectacular."
Chung later shared that welcoming Matthew into their family was "the most wonderful thing." She had been so focused on her career that she was "self-absorbed," but adopting Matthew allowed her to pour all her love into her son. Now, Matthew is engaged and has been with his girlfriend for nearly a decade.
Despite the initial public attention on their attempts to have a child, Povich and Chung have cherished the decision to adopt Matthew, who has brought them immense joy over the past 30 years.
