Rhys Scared to Voice Han Solo for Star Wars

Matthew Rhys revealed his trepidation about voicing Han Solo in a new Welsh language adaptation of Star Wars. The actor found the experience "weird" and "surreal," admitting he was "too scared" to ever discuss the role with Harrison Ford. The project, set to celebrate the sci-fi classic's 50th anniversary next year, has the backing of the First Minister.

The Welsh government's £100,000 contribution to the adaptation has faced criticism from the Welsh Conservatives, who deemed it "out of touch" given ongoing NHS waiting lists. However, the government defended the funding, stating it would "create jobs and grow our economy" while promoting Wales, its language, and culture globally.

Rhys, who now resides in New York, also reflected on his Welsh idols in Hollywood. He cited David Niven and Richard Burton as inspirations for their self-assurance and impact on the industry. Other notable Welsh actors involved in the Star Wars project include Rhys Ifans as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mark Lewis Jones as Darth Vader.
