27 Oct
Summary
- Matthew Perry's 2021 reunion appearance hid severe health issues.
- A 2018 medical emergency ruptured his colon due to opioid overuse.
- His autopsy cited ketamine effects and drowning as causes of death.

Matthew Perry's participation in the 2021 Friends reunion special was a carefully managed appearance, as his health struggles and sobriety issues caused significant concern among his family and friends.
This public return occurred after a severe medical incident in 2018, where opioid overuse caused his colon to rupture. This led to a coma for two weeks and required extensive hospitalization, including months with a colostomy bag. Doctors identified multiple ruptures, resulting in intense sepsis, and Perry underwent numerous surgeries, even requiring an ECMO machine.
Despite his efforts to reassure fans he was doing well, Perry was reportedly "not himself" during the reunion. Friends and family later disclosed the immense pressure he felt and his ongoing battle with sobriety. Perry died at the age of 54 on October 28, 2023. His autopsy report attributed his death to the acute effects of ketamine and drowning.
