Perry's Awkward Rejection Before 'Friends' Stardom

Matthew Perry harbored a significant crush on Jennifer Aniston before they were cast as Chandler Bing and Rachel Green in the iconic sitcom 'Friends'. Perry detailed in his 2022 memoir, 'Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir,' that he had known Aniston for about three years prior to the show.

He recalled feeling an immediate attraction and, after being offered the role of Chandler, he sensed his interest was too obvious. Perry eventually asked Aniston out, but she declined and proposed they maintain a friendship instead. Perry's immediate, awkward response was, "We can't be friends!"

However, this rejection did not hinder their connection. Perry admitted to still having feelings when the cast had their first reading in 1994. By 1998, when Aniston began dating Brad Pitt, Perry had moved past his romantic feelings and they maintained a normal friendship.

Perry's memoir also delved into his career, relationships, and struggles with addiction. He passed away on October 28, 2023, at age 54. His death was ruled an accident, with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner citing acute effects of ketamine among other contributing factors.

Aniston later honored Perry, describing the six 'Friends' stars as a "chosen family." She remembered his love for making people laugh, emphasizing the enduring friendship that began with an unreturned crush.
