Summary
- Estate claims guitarist was owed money at time of death.
- Lawsuit alleges band used likeness on new album cover.
- Band members allegedly revealed private details after his death.

The estate of former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds has initiated a lawsuit against the band, asserting that Hinds was owed compensation for his ownership stake at the time of his passing in August 2025. Hinds died five months after his departure from Mastodon, following a mutual decision to part ways in March 2025.
According to the lawsuit filed in Fulton County Court, Hinds' estate claims no agreement was reached to relinquish his share of the band's music and merchandise. Following his death, the estate received an $80,000 check as a buyout offer, which remains uncashed.
The estate also alleges that Mastodon continued to use Hinds' image in promotional materials and on the cover of their new album, 'Marrow Deep.' The lawsuit states that a face depicted on the album cover resembles Hinds, who did not contribute musically to the LP.
Furthermore, the lawsuit criticizes the remaining band members for discussing Hinds' private life, including issues with substance abuse, after his death. The estate claims these details were shared confidentially and were not to be disclosed, especially after Hinds' passing and during the promotion of the new album.
