Summary
- Former Carlton Cinema in Maryport to be a new arts, music, and theatre center.
- Conversion is expected to be completed by spring next year.
- A community interest company, Maryport Horizons CIC, will manage the venue.

A significant regeneration project in Maryport is nearing completion with the transformation of the ex-Carlton Cinema into a dynamic centre for arts, music, and theatre. The venue's redevelopment is slated for completion by spring 2025, marking a pivotal step in the town's revitalization efforts. This initiative has also involved demolishing an adjacent derelict property to accommodate a new entrance, box office, and bar area, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Maryport Horizons CIC, a community interest company dedicated to benefiting the local community, has been selected to manage the historic building. Subject to finalizing terms, the CIC will lease the site from Cumberland Council and enter into a grant funding agreement. The aim is to establish the repurposed cinema as a central attraction, offering a versatile space for diverse activities including music gigs, theatre, comedy nights, and community gatherings.
The refurbished cinema boasts an auditorium designed to accommodate 280 people, alongside additional office and workshop spaces on its upper floors. This development is part of a larger £12 million regeneration scheme funded by the government, which has already seen improvements to the town's Maritime Museum, community centre, and the construction of a skate park. Catherine Eve, chair of Maryport Horizons, expressed optimism, envisioning the venue as a multi-use space designed to cater to all tastes and ages.
