Summary
- Nia DaCosta directed 2023's 'The Marvels' for Marvel Studios
- DaCosta faced creative challenges during production, lacked full control
- Despite issues, DaCosta maintains positive relationship with Marvel, visits Avengers: Doomsday set

In 2025, Nia DaCosta, the director of the 2023 film 'The Marvels', revealed that she had faced some creative challenges during the production of the Marvel Studios sequel. DaCosta, who was hired to helm the project in 2020, had expressed excitement about working on a Marvel Cinematic Universe film at the time. However, the final product ultimately underwhelmed at the box office and received somewhat lukewarm reviews.
Despite the issues, DaCosta recently told The Guardian that there is no "ire" between her and the Disney-owned superhero brand. In fact, the Candyman filmmaker has remained close with her former collaborators, as evidenced by a recent trip she took to the set of the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, which has been filming in the UK for a large part of the past year. What's more, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige even helped facilitate DaCosta's visit to the Avengers set.
While DaCosta may not be eager to jump back into the comic book-birthed sandbox, the director has remained busy, having recently helmed the drama film Hedda and the upcoming 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Regardless of her future plans, it's heartening to know that there are no harsh feelings between DaCosta and Marvel Studios, and that the two parties have maintained a positive working relationship.
