Martin Short's Emmy Sweep: Acting, Hosting, Doc Subject

Martin Short is experiencing an extraordinary Emmy season, garnering nominations for three separate projects. His acting nod comes for his role in "Only Murders in the Building," for which he also earned an executive producer nomination. Additionally, he is nominated for hosting ABC's "Match Game." A Netflix documentary, "Marty, Life Is Short," directed by Lawrence Kasdan, has also secured three nominations, with Short as its subject.

Short's involvement in the documentary stemmed from a long-standing friendship with director Lawrence Kasdan. He provided Kasdan with extensive personal home movie footage, accumulated over decades using camcorders and later transferred to DVD. This archive, along with home movies shared by Steven Spielberg, formed a rich resource for the documentary. Short also shared that he and his friend John Candy inspired his habit of filming home movies.

Tragically, Short's daughter Katherine passed away in February. Kasdan offered to delay the documentary's release, but Short encouraged them to proceed, finding the film's narrative of "Love, Loss and Survival" to be important. Since its global premiere in May, Short has heard from many who appreciated seeing how he navigated such profound loss. He also mentioned that "Match Game" has no immediate future seasons planned, but remains open to possibilities.
