Anonymity Unveiled: Margiela's Archive Sale
1 Jun
Summary
- Martin Margiela's personal archive is being auctioned in Paris.
- The sale features over 150 lots spanning his career.
- This is the first time Margiela personally orchestrates an archive sale.

Fashion designer Martin Margiela, known for his lifelong anonymity, is set to auction pieces from his personal archive in Paris this July. The sale, featuring over 150 lots, will showcase iconic items, prototypes, and sketches from 1987 to 2008. Rare Hermès pieces from his time designing there are also included.
This unprecedented event is significant as it's the first time Margiela, who shunned the spotlight, has personally curated and overseen the sale of his own memorabilia. Auctioneer Salomé Pirson noted this direct involvement preserves his legacy on his own terms, redefining the artist-market relationship.
The collection includes items like the 'blouse blanche' worn by staff and a signed white-painted pair of Tabis. The auction is scheduled for July 9, with a preview exhibition in Paris from July 4 to 8. The catalog will be available mid-June.
