Married at First Sight Under Investigation
20 Jul
Summary
- UK regulator Ofcom is investigating Married at First Sight UK.
- The probe follows rape allegations against a contestant.
- Channel 4 previously removed episodes and apologized to accusers.

The UK's broadcast regulator, Ofcom, has initiated an investigation into the popular reality television series Married at First Sight UK. This action comes after several weeks of serious allegations, including multiple rape claims made by two women against partners they met on the show. A third woman also reported a non-consensual sex act. As a result of these troubling claims, Channel 4 had previously removed all episodes of Married at First Sight UK from its streaming platform. The broadcaster's CEO issued an apology in late May to the accusers for the "very troubling" allegations.
Ofcom has confirmed the investigation is categorized as 'Fairness and Privacy.' While Channel 4 had commissioned two separate welfare reviews into the show's practices, neither has been publicly released. Lawyers representing the show's production company, CPL Productions, have disputed elements of the claims. Married at First Sight UK has been a significant hit for Channel 4 for over a decade, featuring a format where contestants marry strangers and decide their future together after a honeymoon period.
