Marjane Satrapi, the celebrated Iranian-French author of the graphic novel series "Persepolis," has died at the age of 56. The French presidency announced her passing on Thursday, honoring her as a "freedom-loving artist whose work carried a universal message."
Published over two decades ago, "Persepolis" became a landmark in graphic storytelling, merging political history with intimate memoir. The series' protagonist, Marji, shared a life story with Satrapi, born in Iran in 1969.
Both author and character experienced the overthrow of the Shah at age 10, the rise of clerics, and the Iran-Iraq war. They both left Iran at 14, with Satrapi eventually settling in Paris in 1994 to write.
The "Persepolis" volumes, first published in English in 2003, have been translated and sold to millions worldwide, offering a unique window into the inner lives of modern Iranians.
