According to a music producer, the root of the Carey-Eminem beef may have been Eminem's attempt to cast Carey in his 2002 film 8 Mile. The producer said Eminem wanted Carey to play the role of his character's mother, despite being only four years older than him. Carey was reportedly not pleased with this idea, and the producer believes this sparked the ongoing feud between the two artists.

When asked about this claim, Carey acknowledged there may be truth to it, but said she "really doesn't care" about the situation anymore. She seemed reluctant to discuss the feud in-depth, stating that "whatever he's said, then I'm that, fine."
