María Isabel, known for her "sad girl R&B," is entering a new musical era with her latest EP, which fully embraces her Dominican heritage and a bold, self-assured tone. The project features the new single "Suiza," a dembow-inflected track highlighted by a vibrant music video shot in her homeland. This release marks a significant shift, with all songs now in Spanish, reflecting her upbringing and influences.
Produced by Latin pop architect El Guincho, the sultry R&B and reggaeton-inspired tracks represent a departure from her earlier EPs, "I Hope You're Very Unhappy Without Me" and "Stuck in the Sky." Those projects were characterized by muted beats and lyrics exploring mental health and personal struggles. This new work, however, is inspired by the end of a major relationship and a journey of self-discovery, leading to more upbeat and confident compositions.
Born and raised in Queens, New York, María's musical journey began with vocal lessons and church choir, alongside influences from hip-hop, salsa, and bachata heard in her neighborhood. Despite early dreams of stardom, she pursued higher education at New York University before fully committing to her music career. Her evolving artistic vision now blends her love for hip-hop and Latin pop, trading sad vibes for tropic-hued songs with a pulsing bass, ready for a dynamic live performance.
