Marcus Mumford's Unique Home Rule: No Music Allowed
30 Jul
Summary
- Mumford can't listen to music at home due to intense focus.
- His wife, Carey Mulligan, prefers music absent to enable conversation.
- He enforces a 'no hate' rule at home for a generous spirit.

Musician Marcus Mumford shared why his home has a unique stipulation: no music is played. He explained on the "SmartLess" podcast that his analytical nature prevents him from engaging in background listening.
"If music's on, I want to lean in and listen to it, and I can't switch that part of my brain off," Mumford stated. This intense focus means he often disengages from conversations, a behavior his wife, actress Carey Mulligan, finds disruptive.
Consequently, Mulligan prefers a music-free environment to ensure conversation flows freely. Mumford also noted he listens to music alone and primarily new releases.
In addition to the music rule, Mumford revealed another home guideline: "We have a rule in our house where we don't say hate." He aspires to instill a "spirit of generosity" in his children.
