Manipuri film "Fireflies in the Dark" recently made its world premiere at the 2026 Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF). Screened in the Panorama Cinemas of Asia, the 85-minute film offers a poignant look at the human cost of conflict through three interconnected narratives.
The movie vividly portrays the struggles of individuals caught in violence, including a pregnant woman navigating gunfire, a young boy searching for his mother, and a cafe owner providing refuge. These stories are set against the backdrop of the 2023 ethnic violence in Manipur, emphasizing themes of survival, displacement, and resilience.
Directed by Yogesh Lohan and written by Chingsanglakpa and Lohan, the film employs a fragmented narrative and handheld camerawork to portray the conflict without sensationalizing violence. Lohan drew inspiration from survivors he met in Manipur, aiming to honor their experiences with authenticity.
The cast features notable actors like Bala Hijam Ningthoujam and Leishangthem Tonthoingambi Devi, alongside several first-time actors from remote villages and refugee camps, adding a layer of raw realism to the production.
The VIFF premiere represents a significant achievement for the filmmakers, underscoring producer Jani Viswanath's commitment to regional cinema and overlooked stories. The film's message extends beyond Manipur, advocating for unity and harmony as the path to lasting peace.
