The Mangaluru chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is set to present a week-long photo exhibition titled 'Album of the Porches' starting on October 4, 2025. The exhibition, which will run until October 11, documents the traditional Mangalorean Catholic houses in the city.
The exhibition, which will be inaugurated in the presence of the president of the Catholic Association of South Kanara (CASK), aims to showcase the architectural diversity and cultural significance of these iconic homes. INTACH's project team, led by architect and convener Subhas Basu, has documented 27 such houses across Mangaluru, capturing their unique features, history, and the personal narratives associated with them.
Some of the notable houses featured in the exhibition include Ferndale, linked to Lawrence Fernandes, a key contributor to Fr Muller Hospital; Nandigudda house, associated with the Lobo family; and Camelot, the home of researcher and genealogist Michael Lobo. The exhibition provides a glimpse into the layered histories and cultural contexts of these residences, some of which remain occupied, while others have been left empty or have been sold or demolished.
The project serves as both a documentation and preservation effort, as rapid urban development threatens to erase much of Mangaluru's architectural heritage. An accompanying album-book is planned to ensure that this legacy is preserved for future generations.
