Director Kamal has shed light on the casting of Mammootty in his 1996 film 'Azhakiya Ravanan,' a project now considered one of Kamal's best works. Mammootty's portrayal of the character Shankar Das is still remembered for its distinctiveness.
Kamal shared that the film's producer had reservations about Mammootty playing Shankar Das, a wealthy character with hidden emotional struggles. The producer had actually proposed Mohanlal for the role, finding it hard to imagine Mammootty in such a part. Kamal, however, believed Mammootty's performance offered a unique freshness that differed from what another actor might have delivered.
The director also touched upon the public image surrounding Mammootty during that era. Kamal felt that the perception of Mammootty as boastful and arrogant was merely gossip and not reflective of the actor's true personality. He emphasized Mammootty's genuine nature, which he felt contributed to the nuanced portrayal of the troubled millionaire.
'Azhakiya Ravanan,' written by Sreenivasan, featured a notable cast including Bhanupriya and Cochin Haneefa. The film later saw a spoof spin-off based on Sreenivasan's character.
