Mallorca's Film Fest: From Dream to 15 Years Strong
20 Oct
Summary
- Festival born from a founder's surprise at Mallorca's lack of film events.
- Evolution Mallorca showcases regional cinema and attracts international stars.
- Focus on debut filmmakers and cinematography distinguishes the festival.
Launched in 2012 by Sandra Lipski, who envisioned a film festival for her hometown of Mallorca, Evolution Mallorca is now marking its 15th year, running from October 28 to November 4. Lipski, a former actor, was inspired to create the festival after noticing the absence of such an event on the thriving island, despite similar festivals being common in smaller towns elsewhere.
Over the years, Evolution Mallorca has evolved into a prominent destination festival, showcasing both regional productions and attracting international figures like Danny DeVito and Annette Bening. This year's edition will honor director Edward Berger and cinematographer Matthew Libatique, among others. The festival features over 100 projects, including a record number of feature films.
A core mission of Evolution Mallorca is to provide a platform for emerging filmmakers through its debut feature section and the 'Made in Baleares' program, which highlights local cinema. This year, films like Juan Sut's "Torna" and Danna Ayelén Bosch García's documentary "Un Darrer Capfico" are featured. Lipski emphasizes the festival's commitment to diversity and inclusion, giving equal importance to all films.
The festival also features a unique Cinematography Focus, celebrating the art and craft of filmmaking. Led this year by Matthew Libatique, this section includes workshops and talks, fostering a global meeting point for cinematographers. Lipski also promotes Mallorca as a prime shooting destination, citing its excellent infrastructure and accessibility, aiming to boost the island's film industry through initiatives like 'Mallorca Go'.
